With the Tablet PC and Smartphone industry driving the way websites are used, there are certainly some new challenges for our website designers and it is very difficult to keep up with the various trends.
Some Marketers are requesting that we create two versions of a website – one for the desktop PC and the other for the mobile phone, however this means that both versions need to be maintained and updated. In addition, consideration needs to be made on whether to automatically direct the user or allow them to choose which version of the website they wish to use.
The simplest way to automatically direct the user is with a JavaScript code in the header of the HTML. This can then re-adjust to the appropriate screen size and can therefore be customised to suit Android, iPhone, iPad or other Tablet PC devices. However some users turn off ‘Java Script’ in their browsers, so it is also wise to have a link somewhere on your website to click from a mobile or desktop version, and vice versa.
Another way is to use WordPress. If you already use WordPress you can use a Mobile Plug-In. This enables a user to switch from mobile to desktop when looking at your website. The great thing about using this solution is that your website is automatically mobile ready and you only need to maintain one version of your site.
Technology of course is improving all the time, and possibly when going to press, there are already better and improved solutions in the marketplace.
